Basketball is Life:
Reportage Drawings from
The Cage on West 4 St.
Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, The Charging Bull: These are the symbols of New York City to the entire world–except, of course, people who live here.
To propose an alternative landmark, I created a series of live sketches at The Cage, a basketball court walked past by many but known by few. By sharing my work on social media, I put this unlikely corner of the city in front of 375,000 viewers.

A Look Inside
New York City has many basketball courts, but what is so characteristic about The Cage is how its proximity to busy intersections invites pedestrians to peer through the chain link fence and watch pickup games.
Finding this a useful way to frame images and symbolize the area, I included chain link fences as a compositional starting point throughout the series.
